Introducing Your New Kitten

Bringing a new pet into your household can be stressful for some of the members, while being joyful for others. If you have small children, other cats or dogs in your family, bringing home a new kitten will require some planning and preparation. Get some tips from fellow cat lovers in the pet community of ebayclassifieds. Your first step should always be to make sure that all pets, new and existing, have had adequate veterinarian examinations and immunizations. Small children should never be left with a new pet while unsupervised.

Once you are ready to bring your new kitten home, prepare a room where the kitten will spend her first days. This may be your bedroom, den or a spare room, but should not be a room where other pets are accustomed to spending large amounts of time. This will allow your new pet to become familiar with your house while other animals are adapting to the smell of the newcomer. After several days, you may be ready to physically introduce your pets to one another.

You must diligently supervise these first encounters. If any of your pets display outright violence toward another, separate them immediately for a later try. It can take several weeks to acclimate existing pets to an addition, and some older pets may never be completely friendly to the new one. Most often, however, the pets will find at least a form of truce where they spend most of their time in separate rooms. If this is the direction your pets are headed, you can help them out by providing separate litter boxes, snuggling beds, window sills or other spaces that they prefer.

Preparing for Your New Kitten

When preparing for your new kitten, it isn’t enough for your kitten to have a safe place to live or even good food to eat; special care should be given for his/her well being.

Milk, water and wet food are good places to start, but so are veterinary visits soon after you take your new pet home. Spaying or neutering is important to some folks, and the sooner this is done the better.

Keep up on all your vaccines. Have the vet routinely check your kitten’s ears for mites, fleas, and flea dirt. Check your kitten’s stool for worms or parasites, and remember to keep your veterinarian abreast of any perceived sicknesses through sources like Canada 411. It’s always better to be safe than sorry when it comes to the health of your pet.

Long haired cats especially need to be groomed to prevent fur balls lodging in their throat. This means brushing at home, and maybe even a visit to the vet for a little trim. Your kitten will become physically unfit without the use of a few toys scattered throughout the house. But be prepared for your kitten to like something you haven’t purchased that he/she has found and claimed for their favorite toy.

Keeping your kitten in tip-top physical health does not have to include jumping on kitchen tables or scrounging for food on the kitchen counter. Spend time with your kitten playing with a ball of yarn or their favorite sock and you will find that they will receive much of the exercise they need for physical health.

Kitty Cat Swag

Cat swag is one of the most popular niche markets when it comes to the category of animal items. Cat owners all over the world are purchasing toys for their cat so that they can bond and spend time with their furry friend.

There are multiple benefits for purchasing cat swag. The first benefit is that it allows cats to vent out their predatory instincts in a safe and healthy way. Cats love to bat and hit various items. If they do not have a way to do this, they could take it out on their owners. Some of the best way for cats to take out their predatory instincts is through special cat toys such as cat nip, cat bouncy balls, and even a toy that is similar to a fishing rod that allows the owner to wiggle the item around and have the cat chase it.

The second benefit of cat swag is the ability for the cats and owners to form stronger bonds. Studies have shown that pet owners that spend at least 30 minutes a day with their pet have lower levels of stress than people who do not spend that time with their pet or did not own a pet. Cat swag such as toys and pet costumes are a great way for cats and owners to spend time together and form stronger bonds. All of the cat swag talked about above that allows the cats to get their predatory instincts out will also help with forming personal bonds between cat owners and their pets.

Some cat swag items are just about being silly and fun. Owners have been known to purchase huge cat condos for their pet to sleep in as well as bedding and blankets. These items are more accessories than helping to form the cat/pet owner bond.

Leash Walking Is Safe For Your Cats

It is safe to make your cat walk on leash. Usually cats do not feel comfortable walking with leash as dogs are. But it is necessary for your cat’s safety, especially if you live in a busy neighborhood as such places have a high traffic and are prone to accidents. A leash and a harness will be available at any local pet shop. Avoid placing your cat in danger by taking precautions. A harness is placed around the front legs of the cat to which a leash is connected. Harness is like a jacket for a cat usually carrying it is not comfortable for your pet you need to get it acquainted with it first.

Dogs are usually very comfortable with a leash but this is not the same case with the cats let them get used to it first by making them wear the harness at home and once they are used to it attach a leash which should be long enough to let them go around in a big radius. A collar is also an option to use but cats can come out of it very easily hence it is not advisable for them a harness will make it impossible for them to cut loose. It will take some time for cats to get used to it you have to be very patient while training them for it so that they do not end up getting hit by a car or eaten by a dog and are always in a safe zone and in front of your eyes.

When your cat is used and comfortable with the harness and a leash take it out for frequent walks which will make them more used to it. Put a long leash for them so that they can go as far as they can and feel no pressure only restrict the length when you feel they are entering into a danger zone. How much ever busy your schedule is never take them out without a harness as it will not take much time.

Health Issues With Fat Cats

While it may be cute to have a slightly overweight cat, it really does more harm than good. Obesity or being over-weight is just as dangerous for a cat as it can be for a human adult or child. Cats with more than a couple of extra pounds can have severe cardiovascular problems. For extra bit of weight your cat has, the cats body will have to make and produce extra capillaries and veins, to pump blood to the new pounds the cat has put on. Cats with extra weight on their bodies will also have respiratory problems. The heavier a cat gets, the harder it will be for the cat to exercise and may cause problems with their joints; especially in a cats hips.

Over weight cats are more prone to injuries. If they are severely overweight and jump off of a couch your cat could break its leg or legs. When a cat is overweight they become lethargic, causing digestive problems, making it harder for your cat to go to the bathroom and could cause a rupture colon of fecal matter stays in the intestine for too long. Obesity can lead to a number of different disorders and in an older cat can even cause death. If your cat is overweight and experiencing these health disorders you probably never even thought that your cat being overweight had something to do with it, but it does. It may seem cruel to deny your furry fat cat a treat or a little extra to eat, but if you want to keep your cat around for awhile and value you the quality of their life, you may need to place your cat on a diet to keep them healthy and around for years to come; living happy and peppy, instead of lazy and sick.

Can I Walk My Cat On A Leash?

It is always a good idea to get indoor cats outdoors, but you don’t want to just let them go off on their own. If you live in a very busy neighborhood in the city where there are cars and many dangers that your cat can encounter that may put them in danger there are ways to take your cat outside without them getting into trouble and still allow you to keep a close eye on them. You can buy a harness and leash for your cat from many pet stores. A harness goes around the cat’s front legs and chest and the leash, which should be about six foot long, will connect to the harness. Collars can be used instead of a harness, but these are very easy for your cat to get away from. Just like walking a dog you can walk your feline friend, however; getting a cat used to walking around on a leash may be a little trickier than it is with a dog.

If your once friendly kitty cat is now acting like a maniac and resisting the new idea to walk on a leash there are certain things you can try to get him or her used to the idea. Place the harness on her, without the leash connected to it, and leave it on her. Only leave it on for a few minutes and gradually a little longer until she gets used to having it on. Next attach the leash part of it and do the same thing that you did with the harness. When your cat is ready, he or she will let you walk her, and when he/she does take her outside. Do not tug on the leash or harness; let your cat do the walking unless they are roaming to area that may not be safe. Gradually take her out more and more, and in no time you will have your cat leash walking.

Milk and Your Cats Belly

It’s very common to see people feeding their cats milk as an occasional treat and sometimes everyday; but just because that’s what you see others doing, whether it be in life or on T.V., doesn’t mean it’s right or the best thing to have in a cat’s diet. Cats can tolerate milk in their diet for a while, but after a while more often than not, they will develop and intolerance for it. Too much milk in a cat’s diet will cause them to develop lactose intolerance and digesting the sugars in the milk will cause stomach upset. When a cat has stomach issues from drinking milk, diarrhea can be a problem and lead to dehydration if you keep feeding her milk. Keep a bowl of water available for cat all times of the day to keep him/her hydrated if this happens. If you regularly are feeding or letting your cat drink milk, keep an eye on her stools in the litter box. If you notice a change in consistency or color of your cats stools, cut out all the milk for a couple of days and see if this clears up any problems. If you take the milk out of your cat’s diet and her stools go back to normal, it’s best to quit giving her milk, as it is like she has built intolerance for it. Find another treat you can use to satisfy your cat instead of milk. Treats are nice, but there are also fun little kitty cat toys out there for your cat to play with that won’t put weight on your kitty and keep him/her in great shape. Make milk a treat for your kitty once a month at a time when he/she is being an especially good cat or if you just are looking to give your cat a nice surprise.

Variety of Cat Foods Available.

There are many different foods available for your cat on the shelves of grocery stores and pet stores. There are three different types of cat food that you can expect to find on any store shelves and those are dry foods, soft and moist foods, and canned foods. The great thing about having so many varieties is that there is food for any cat’s taste, medical condition or age. With the different varieties and formulated brands for kittens to adults you can keep your cat in the best shape ever just with proper food consumption.
Dry cat food products are hard crunchy kibbles that helps keep a cats teeth as clean as can be. When a cat bites down into a piece of kibble the food scratches the teeth removing any plaque and tartar build up that has accumulated on his or her littler teeth. Dry food also keeps longer in the pantry, meaning, nor do they need to be refrigerated.
Soft and moist food products are what most home owners choose to feed their cats. These cat foods offer the freshness of canned cat food, but also keep teeth clean and are easier to chew. Soft and moist foods stay fresh for a descent amount of time, but not as long as dry cat food.
Canned cat foods are usually a kitty’s favorite, but are not always the best for a pet owner’s budget. Once you open a can of this cat food it needs to placed in a plastic container and placed in the refrigerator if your cat doesn’t eat all of it at one time or it will spoil. Canned cat food should not be left in the refrigerator any more than 24 to 48 hours.
